Hand 'n Hand Exhibit at The Cummer Through April 1

VSAFL in partnership with the Gannett Foundation is proud to announce the Hand ‘n Hand Exhibit, running from February 13 – April 1, at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens which features the work of students and their respective teaching artists.

The Hand ‘n Hand program allows for not only a teaching artist to work with students for 8 sessions but an for artist with a disability, with whom they are able to identify with on a different level through common ground in overcoming challenges, to work on a collaborative piece with the students. The exhibit will recognize the hard work of teaching artists, students from Crystal Springs Elementary, Holiday Hill Elementary, Reynolds Lane Elementary and Westview K-8 School as well as the artist who worked with students to create the collaborative pieces. Teaching and Hand ‘n Hand artists include Beryl Bayer, Jordan Foster, Chris Kastle and Linda Thale. The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is located at 829 Riverside Avenue in Jacksonville.

The VSA Florida Artist in Residency Program fosters opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities, to successfully learn life skills through the arts. The arts are a profound tool for learning that enables students to share their beautiful voice of self expression and enhances capacity to fathom across cultural boundaries. VSA Florida encourages the arts as an outlet for communication, a means to unite students of all abilities and as a guide on the pathway to opportunities. Student production of art leads to a sense of self-accomplishment through creation and mastery. Through explaining their art, students become more fluent and imaginative at expressing their own creative ideas.

VSA Florida was founded in 1981 and is a member of VSA, the International Organization on Arts and Disability, a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  Based at the University of South Florida College of Education, VSA Florida provides arts, education, and cultural opportunities for and by people with disabilities through a network of program partners in every Florida County.
