Looking for a Job? Virtual Fair Continues Through Friday
Business

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Looking for a job?

Starting a new career could be as easy as logging on and uploading your resume.

First Coast Workforce Development is holding a "virtual job fair" this week.

It began at midnight Monday and runs through midnight Friday. The job fair features more than 50 employers and over 300 job opportunities on their website.

Once you go to the site, create a user name and password.  Then you can upload your resume and start applying.

Virtual job fairs have become more popular for both companies and their potential employees.

"It's really convenient for the job seekers," said Candace Moody, Vice President of Communications for Worksource.  "They get a chance to stay home in their bunny slippers and browse through companies who are hiring and apply for jobs without getting dressed up, managing crowds or paying for parking."

Moody added that employers like online job fairs because they can review applications from the convenience of their desks, without having to invest several hours at a job fair on location.

However, virtual job fairs do present one major challenge.  Applicants do not have face to face contact with company representatives.

"One of the big differences in a virtual job fair from a physical one is that you're not going to be there," explained Moody.  "Your potential employer can't see your passion or your interest for the job or how intelligent and articulate you are.  Your resume has to do all the talking.  So, one of the things we talk about for this virtual job fair is to really target their resume for that particular job."

Worksource holds a virtual job fair once every quarter and an average of about 4,000 applicants participate. To stand out, Moody suggests you try to match your experience and skills with the available jobs and not apply to every posting.

Florida State College Jacksonville has created an online guide that can walk you through how to create a resume that highlights your qualifications based on individual job listings.
