Believe in Heroes is a Wounded Warrior Project™ initiative that calls on Americans to recognize the enormous sacrifices made by our newest generation of veterans and to honor the service of these individual over a two-month campaign leading up to Veterans Day. The Believe in Heroes campaign will provide the American public with an opportunity to show their support and appreciation of our veterans in their communities, and across the nation

Group donates unprecedented million dollars to launch homeless veterans' center in Northeast Florida

 

Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. and Affiliates (AVW) have donated $1,000,000 to purchase a building and provide start-up costs for a Jacksonville area in-house center to help veterans in need.

The group’s aggressive goal is to immediately fill a void for American heroes who have fallen on hard times during this tumultuous economy by opening the AVW Veterans Center in time for the holidays, according to Jerry Bass, National Commander, Allied Veterans of the World, Inc.

Today is Veterans Day. To honor the courageous men and women of our Armed Forces, both past and present, here are several ways that folks are supporting these individuals, including ideas on how you can make your impact:

Retailers, Restaurants Offer Veterans Day Freebies

 

Vets on a tight budget can put away their wallets over the next few days.

Some of the nation's largest retailers are offering a satchel full of freebies to veterans and active military members in honor of Veterans Day. Most of the freebies require proof of military service. Many are restricted to specific hours on Friday, but some of the giveaways begin earlier and have fewer restrictions.

Community Giving Tent Donation Stations to Open

 

Riverside Arts Market (RAM) opens the Community Giving Tent Donation Station this Saturday, Nov. 5th through Nov. 26th.  The tent will be a drop-off/collection spot for a variety of non-profits collecting items for community members in need. 

Cummer’s 50th Anniversary Community Celebration

 

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is celebrating 50 years of art, gardens and education by hosting the 50th Anniversary Community Celebration in honor of the Museum and its legacy. The event is Friday, November 11, 2011, from Noon to 8 p.m. and will feature fun and exciting things to do, including art-making, artist demonstrations, gallery activities, musical concerts, live radio broadcast and surprises all day. Admission is free all day and there will be Anniversary toasts at Noon and 6 p.m., followed by an evening concert in the gardens at 6:30 p.m. with the University of North Florida Jazz Ensemble 1 under the direction of J.B. Scott. They will play music ranging from the 40s to today’s hits. Guests are welcome to bring chairs and blankets for the garden concert. The Community Celebration will be a wonderful grand finale to the 50th Anniversary Year.
