JU Orthodontists Set the Record Straight During National Orthodontic Health Month

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – Orthodontists at Jacksonville University are taking time during October’s National Orthodontic Health Month to educate the public and clarify best practices for the maintenance of your smile.

Dr. Mark Alarbi, dean and program director of the Jacksonville University School of Orthodontics, said there are many myths that need to be busted regarding orthodontic care, but one of the most common misconceptions is that parents need to wait for their children to loose all of their baby teeth before evaluating the need for braces.

“Probably the best time to think about getting your child screened is between about eight and 10 years old – when they’ve lost some, but not all of their teeth,” Dr. Alarbi said. “That doesn’t mean they need to get braces right then, but it’s very helpful to screen at that time because some things may be able to be done early to ready the child for braces and possibly decrease the amount of time the braces will need to be worn.”

Dr. Alarbi said that another common misconception is that metal braces are the only way to correct bite and straighten teeth, which causes many adults especially to steer away from dental correction. JU School of Orthodontics offers four other options in addition to traditional braces: Invisalign®, Incognito™ braces, ceramic braces and self-ligating braces.

“We provide free screenings in an effort to help identify the best plan of action for every individual,” Dr. Alarbi said. “Every patient is different, so every treatment plan is different.”

In tandem with its educational outreach efforts, the JU School of Orthodontics will award two lucky First Coast residents with a free set of braces, one on October 15 and one on November 30, in celebration of National Orthodontic Health Month. Winners will be selected at random to receive a certificate for a free set of braces as well as full comprehensive course of orthodontic care from JU School of Orthodontics.
