St. Vincent’s Southside Opens Area’s First All-private NICU Rooms

St. Vincent’s Southside Opens Area’s First All-private NICU Rooms

St. Vincent’s Medical Center Southside, formerly St. Luke’s Hospital, is now home to Northeast Florida’s first, all-private Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  The new NICU suites are designed to provide parents and their premature infants’ comfort in a private, quiet setting.

Research has shown the single-room model of infant care in the NICU decreases complications, improves weight gain and shortens the hospital stay for these tiny infants.  In the traditional open bay NICU, babies are exposed to lights and sounds that disrupt their sleep and interfere with their breathing and heart rate. The single-room model offers a much quieter environment with lower light exposure which results in less stress for these premature babies.  Each NICU suite has a comfortable sofa bed and recliner so parents can sleep in the room with their newborns.

Safe Kids NE Florida and Wolfson Children’s Hospital Offer Winter Reminder about Bulky Jackets and C

Now that winter and some colder temperatures are here, Safe Kids Northeast Florida, led by Wolfson Children’s Hospital, has a seasonal reminder for parents and caregivers about transporting children in car seats. Infants, toddlers and children riding in car seats with internal harnesses should not be placed in the car seat with thick jackets, sweaters, or coats on, due to the issue of “coat compression.”

Child Wellness Tips: Stay Active This Holiday Season!

Child Wellness Tips: Stay Active This Holiday Season!

From author, Stephanie Walsh, M.D., Medical Director, Child Wellness, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

The holiday season has arrived! It’s a time for parties, presents and holiday cheer. However, it can also be a season of little activity and over-indulging. As the weather cools down, children are often tempted to stay inside in front of the T.V. or a video game rather than play outside. Holiday specials also can draw your family to the T.V. screen this time of year. Eating healthily can present additional challenges when faced with party buffets, holiday sweets and large family meals.
