Burglaries On The Rise In Avondale | News
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There has been a sharp increase in the number of burglaries in the Avondale-Riverside area and police are urging residents to be alert.
First Coast News checked burglary statistics after an Avondale man was shot in his garage Thursday morning when he surprised a burglar. Brian Plauche, 28, was shot in the stomach during a tussle with the suspect.
Burglaries in the first two months of 2012 in the 32205 zip code which includes Avondale, Riverside and Murray Hill totaled 98, versus 64 in the first two months of 2011. Vehicle burglaries went up from 21 to 41 and business burglaries increased more than 300 percent, from nine to 32.
"Wow! " said Mark Pebbleton who lives on Cherry Street. "But I am not surprised. We have had several break-ins around here of late, people mostly going through back doors, grabbing what they want and they go. I have seen more police riding around lately which is a good thing."
Lt. Matt Nemeth of JSO's burglary division says this trend of more burglaries began late in 2011. They have made no arrrests in the Avondale cases but are looking at two people of interest.
Nemeth urges residents to be careful. "In many of the burglaries the burglars go through the back door. But we found in some cases the deadbolts were not locked. In some cases the homes had burglar alarms, but they were not armed. And after the fact, neighbors reported to police that strange cars were seen in the driveways of the victims but police were not called, If anyone see anything suspicious, please call the police."
