Scot Ackerman, M.D. of First Coast Oncology has been recognized as a Patients' Choice physician by Vitals, an online database that compiles information on physicians from a wide variety of sources. Of the nation's 720,000 active physicians, only 5 percent received this honor by their patients in 2011.

“Our practice truly takes a patient-centered approach,” said Dr. Ackerman, Medical Director of First Coast Oncology.  “We offer a patient experience that is different than most practices; we believe in not just treating a patient’s cancer, but also in meeting their emotional needs,” he added.  First Coast Oncology provides radiation therapy to patients in Northeast Florida. Dr. Ackerman is board-certified in Radiation Oncology and is Chief of Radiation Oncology at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

The Patients' Choice honor is a reflection of patients' appreciation and praise for the quality of care and service a physician provides, rating physicians in areas such as bedside manner, doctor-patient face time, follow-up care, ease of appointment setting, and courtesy of office staff.

Dr. Ackerman established the First Coast Cancer Foundation to help his patients through difficult financial times arranging everything from gas cards for transportation to treatment to assistance paying bills at home while patients are out of work.  “In many cases, finishing treatment is not the end of a patient’s journey. They often need continued support both emotionally and financially for some time,” he said.
