St. Vincent’s Southside Earns Joint Commission Center of Excellence Status in 4 Categories

St. Vincent’s Medical Center Southside is proud to be the only hospital in the nation to receive the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for spinal surgery, hip replacement, knee replacement and shoulder replacement.  After an on-site review in early April, the hospital received the elite designations and stands out as the first hospital in the country with all four.

“We are proud of the entire multidisciplinary team at St. Vincent’s Southside for their efforts to earn these prestigious Center of Excellence designations,” said Donnie Romine, President of St. Vincent’s Medical Center Southside.  “It demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to achieving the highest national standards for safety and quality of care for our patients.”

The Joint Commission evaluated St. Vincent’s Southside for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. The designations are considered the gold standard in recognizing healthcare quality and safety.

“With an aging population, more and more people are suffering from arthritis and joint pain and require surgery to alleviate the pain so they can live full, high-quality lives.  We are proud to offer people in our community these Centers of Excellence that provide superior care” said Gavan Duffy, MD and Orthopedic Surgeon.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the top two causes for disability include arthritis and back or spine problems.  Statistics show 1 in 10 adults have trouble walking a distance equal to walking from the parking lot to the back of a large store or through a mall.

“Our goal is to help patients restore function and reduce pain so they can get back to living productive lives,” said Dr. Ali Chahlavi, Neurosurgeon with the St. Vincent’s Spine & Brain Institute.  “Achieving Joint Commission certification in spinal surgery is a major accomplishment which demonstrates our commitment to continually improving the care we provide.”

Certification requirements addressed the following three core areas:

  • compliance with consensus-based national standards
  • effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care
  • organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities

"Joint Commission certification recognizes St. Vincent’s Southside consistently delivers high quality care.  The fact we achieved this distinction in four categories, which no other hospital in the United States has done, shows we are a leader in our field” said Jennifer Crews, Director of Neurosciences and Orthopedics at St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
